    1. Slight problem Peter, he died in 1917 prior to the foundation of the RAF in April 1918, therefore his medal would be named RFC, he has to be a different L H Smith. Paul
    2. The colonial Al Valore is a very rare beast both in silver and bronze and yours is in surprisingly good condition and thus not the easiest thing to put a price on but I would have thought and auction estimate of £2,000 would be sensible and it might go on to reach £2,500 or so. Hope this is of help. Paul
    3. Although the Cape of Good Hope General Service was issued in 1900 for campaigns which took place in Transkei and Basutoland during 1881, the year of the 1st Boer War. Paul
    4. Lars, as ever absolutely amazing, how you manage to get such fantastic miniatures amazes me. Paul
    5. Probably but the company and the possibility to get one of his cast offs for the evening would more than compensate for it. Paul
    6. Sounds quite a nice chap just a weakness for women and unfortunately not enough funds of his own to support them. Sort of chap it would be probably quite enjoyable to share a bottle of scotch with. PAul
    7. Interestingly both Legion d'Honneurs purport to be July Monarchy issues as they both have the crown and tricolours. What as set of miniatures!!! Paul
    8. 34th Sikh Pioneers took part in the Kut campaign and later distinguished themselves in the Mashud campaign of 1919, not listed as a casualty and as another rank virtually unresearchable. Paul
    9. Wouldn't want to meet him down a dark alley. Paul
    10. Well done on acquiring a nice set, as you say difficult to come by both cased and with ribbon. I'm sure Nick will have images of the 8th Class in wear. Paul
    11. Demir thank you so much for this most useful link, I have been scratching my head for years to find anyone to translate ottoman documents. Paul
    12. I can see the 900 clearly, no pun intended but I can't find the WC maybe I am looking in the wrong place. Paul
    13. Yes could well be French made, the jewellers in Paris had a field day during the post 1815 allied occupation. Paul
    14. I used to enjoy collecting stamps in my youth. I had two stamp albums which covered up till 1930 and in those days if stamps were not British or Commonwealth they tended to end up in the dealers penny box. I found the post WWI issues of ephemeral territories such as Memel, Ingermanland and Fiume especially interesting also the KuK Feldpost issues were fun. Paul
    15. A Laotian made piece, quality is never that brilliant, perfectly OK Commander's neck badge, probably around 150 euros would be a fair price. A well made French piece would be easily double. Paul
    16. It's the Order of St Marinus, no such thing as the Order of St Markus '>
    17. Rishi, Don't forget toughras differ from ruler to ruler so it is possible to be a Bahawalpur order from an earlier period, I have seen this piece in several German catalogues described as unknown but I have always worked on the assumption that it is a Bahawalpur Order. All the best, Paul
    18. Its a bronze gilt 1916-17 issue, by Dmitri Osipov, collectable and actually scarcer without swords, value $500-750 dependant on class, if you can give me the width I can telly you straight away what class it is. Paul
    19. Also need size to confirm whether it is 3rd or 2nd class. for a Third Class civil by either Eduard or Albert Keibel $1,200 would now be a strong price, the market for Imperial Orders with the exception of extreme rarities has taken a bit of a nose dive over the last year, which is a good thing for non-Russian collectors. Paul
    20. Demir, I assume that this applied to Ottoman recipients rather than honorary foreign awards. All the best, Paul
    21. What a wonderful group, so nice to have all the relevant documentation, well done in getting it. Paul
    22. Frane, without having detailed photos of the marks it is impossible to be sure, all I can say is that it is one of the most faked Imperial badges. Paul
    23. Max, I suspect it is a private European issue from around the 1830s, when awarded the KCB at this period they were issued with the regular badge and a tinsel star, many people had metal stars privately made. The British made pieces generally had the makers name on it which makes me think that it is European. Paul
