Hi Paul, "... the blue cord at the base of the shoulder strap. Is this optional?" No, the "Schlaufe" (loop) is mandatory in the Army (Heer). It seems, that it is not the correct coloured loop, because the loop for medicals is dark blue; this loop seems to be medium blue, the colour for logistics. Uwe

Hi Paul, it is a civilian award, nearly impossible for EM and very seldom for NCOs. The lower award, the "Verdienstmedaille" http://ordensmuseum.de/bundesverdienstorden/stufen/stufe-verdienstmedaille/ is more accessible, but really not often. I could honor one of my NCOs with the medal, but it was difficult. Normal and very good soldierly service is not enough for such an award, you need some more extraordinary civilian engagement. Uwe

Hi Jens, "... many german soldiers who do not wear their awards at all which is a "no go" in my opinion..." I was one of those soldiers. "... he is wearing his awards not according to ZDV 37/10 (german field manual), but I, personally, do not care as long as he was awarded all of this stuff." And everybody can add, what he want to add? And you (and others) disobey the German regulations, because you prefer an own personal view? And if you disobey these official rules, you can commit other refusals of command? That is valid for you and your subordinated soldiers? I'm wondering, really. Uwe

Hi Jens, I think (hope), that you don't wear this miniatur medal bar (Kleine Ordensschnalle) officially? It is for example not allowed, to wear the "Europäische Polizei-Leistungsabzeichen" on a Bw-Uniform, and it is not allowed, to wear two sports badges. That is, in my very personal opinion, "overdressed". Uwe

Help identifying some Medals

Hi, totally unrealistic. You can find another auction, 50€ unsold. That is the reality. Uwe -
Help identifying some Medals
speedytop replied to Matty85's topic in Great Britain: Orders, Gallantry, Campaign Medals
Hi, unsold medals are not a good reference. As an example, a few years ago I bought one of my "Stein" medals for 32 €. Uwe -
Gordon, I'm not able to say anything about the originality of such Polish crosses, that must be done by others with real knowledge about Polish decorations. There are many different pieces as we can see here in this thread. Measuring two of the pieces in my collection, see above my picture, I find differences, compared with your measured dimensions. Left one, where I hope, that it is an original: width 43.5mm, height 44.3mm, thickness 2.3mm Right one, where I think, that it is a copy: width 45.6mm, height 46.0mm, thickness 3.5mm Your cross seem to be a mixture , thickness like an original, but the other dimensions like a copy. Based on my measurementes, your cross should have a diameter of 46.5mm/46.6mm. Let us hope, that Lukasz is willing, to comment it. Uwe

Hi Gordon, I had the same problem. It seems, that here is a very special measurement requested. I take the information from above for my picture, left an original (I hope it), on the right a copy (the dimensions of the copy in brackets): greene > overall arm length with finials = 16.4mm (16.8mm) yellow > overall arm length without finials = very difficult to measure blue > arm width = 10.9mm (11.7mm) red > total diameter = 45.0mm (47.0mm) thickness = 2.3mm (3.5mm) Uwe

Help identifying some Medals
speedytop replied to Matty85's topic in Great Britain: Orders, Gallantry, Campaign Medals
Hi Matty85, the second medal is for some elected members of sports events everywhere in Germany, only for the winners of larger competitions. Such medals had been awarded from 1923 up to 1932. The day of the sports competitions was in every year the "11. August", the constitution day. In the first years only 200 - 350 medals per year had been awarded, in the last years 2300 or some more. See for example a document, here for Silber; your version is in Bronze: Uwe -

Fire Insurance enamel sign?
speedytop replied to Jock Auld's topic in Non Military Collectibles & Antiques
Hi, I think, the diameter is 19cm? Such signs were fixed on houses as an advertisement, where an insurance contract with the "Land-Feuersozietät der Provinz Sachsen" exist. See for example: http://www.arco-images.de/land-feuersozietaet-der-provinz-sachsen-versicherungs-plakette-bilder-fotos/633219.html Uwe -
Hi Jock, "... officers had bullion badges on their headgear?" They can, but they must not. "Offiziere und Unteroffiziere dürfen selbstbeschaffte, handgestickte Abzeichen tragen." > they may wear ... Uwe

Hi Chris, I think, that these dog tags had been issued first to the soldiers of the 1. Garderegiment zu Fuß, "das vornehmste Regiment der zivilisierten Christenheit". Sources say, that they had been introduced 1869 as "Regognitionsmarke", and since 1878, but another model, as "Erkennungsmarke". And the sources say, that they had first been handed out during the mobilization in 1870. Uwe
