Old topic but an interesting one. I read somewhere that the star on item is from Austrian. Probably a special one. Do you have size and weight of your cross ?

EKII, Hindenburg cross, Reuss medal, Finnish war of liberty medal and Finnish medal of merit 1918.
Does anyone know anything about Reuss soldiers in the Finnish war of liberty?

You are right, they are identical except that the finnish medals have switched place.

I wonder how usual this combination of medals are.

Dr. Alphons Schäfer got the Reuß Cross of Honor 3rd class on 10th of November 1915. This was the birthday of Prince Heinrich XXVII. Reuß j. L. The decoration with crown was awarded mainly to individuals, connected to the reigning house. I suppose, that Dr. Schäfer as specialist and director of the not far located lunatic asylum in Roda was also responsible for the treatment of the because of mental illness incapable of reigning Prince Heinrich XXIV ä. L.

The recipient was most likely not a native of Reuß.

The three most common ways to receive an award from one of the German states were (1) be a native of the state, (2) serve in that state's contingent, or (3) serve in a unit whose Chef or Inhaber was the ruler of a state. We often overlook this third category, but it was pretty common. 

In this case, the most likely connection is Jäger-Bataillon Nr. 4 of the Ostsee-Division. The Chef of Jäger-Bataillon Nr. 4 was Heinrich XXVII. Fürst Reuß j.L., the ruling prince of Reuß-Gera and regent of Reuß-Greiz. There are no complete rolls for Reuß awards, but there are many known awards to JB 4 officers and men from other sources.

I looked through the battalion history a few years' ago. There wasn't any information there. The RJB 4 history has a list of award numbers to that unit, which shows that Reuß awards were second only to Prussian awards in the battalion. I would imagine the numbers were similar for JB 4.

The Deutsche Forst-Zeitung also published a list of Reuß awards to JB 4 in 1914 and early 1915, but I have yet to find any lists for later war years. There were 49 silver medals with swords in that list, with the recipients ranging from Vizefeldwebel to Jäger.

Thank you very much Dave for great information. My knowledge about imperial German awards are very little since I collect Finnish awards.

To me it´s unbelievable how you can find all this information about awards and research medalbars. I don´t understand how but it´s amazing.

Here's something of a rarity - a soldier wearing the retired pilot's badge and the Kriegsverdienstkreuz from Reuß.
I understand that O'Connor only found two airmen who received this award, but they were both killed during the war...
