Re your post to German Artillery: Posted 5 Nov 2013
I am currently researching and writing about the loss of HMS Ben-my-Chree to German/Turkish artillery fire on 9 January 1917 at Castellorizo.
Whilst I have a published book on Ben-my-Chree the story of her loss I was never satisfied with. New research has enabled me to correct and enhance the story. The article will eventually be published in Cross and Cockade International Journal.
Now, finally to get to the point, the photos of the 15cm schweres Feldhaubitze 13 L/14 in the post are the same type of gun used by the German battery in January 1917. Unless I can locate similar photos of the guns in Turkey (proving difficult) I would like to use one of your images in my article, probably #4 in the post.
If you are agreeable to this, could you perhaps provide a good quality scan and let me know how I should credit the image. I will also provide you with a copy of the Journal containing the image.
Best regards
Ian Burns

Paul, have an extremely battered childhood scrap-book compiled by the son (only child) of Cap. William Lewis BH. The son was Maj. Rowland BH (full name Casimir Paul Francis Rowland BH) b.25-Aug-1911 d.19-Mar-1993. This scrap-book, full of newspapers cutting etc, is signed "R.P.F. Blennerhassett year 1923" so he was aged c12 years. This family loved playing with the arrangement of their many initials. Much had been removed from or otherwise lost from the scrap book prior to me acquiring it, but an amount remains in it. There are not many family photos left but I think it may have photos of Rowland as a boy, and of his parents. I purchased the scrap-book on eBay, also on eBay I found an original photo of Capt. Wm Lewis BH's father (Sir Rowland BH, 4th Bart.) and a couple more relatives. The family were aristocratic R.C., this is confirmed by the cuttings which mention people they were related to or friends with. One photo appears to be Oswald Moseley. In the last couple of years I have corresponded with a couple of people about Capt. William lewis BH but won't mention their names, could do so by email. I have a sale group photograph of the medals you display, plus another "The Order of the White Rose" which is not in your photo. regards, Bill

Dear Kim -- My great-grandfather, Rosendo Buenaventura Torras (1851-1929). of Brunswick, Georgia, was awarded the Order of Vasa (I don't know in what year). I've checked the foreign section of the 1905 list to which you referred someone earlier, but don't find him there. I'm wondering if you could direct me to any on-line sources that might give the year of the award and, if not, if I could impose on you to consult the materials you have in your possession. I believe the likeliest time frame is 1890-1895.
Thanks, in advance, for your time and any help you may be able to give me.
Best wishes,
Arthur

Hi Arthur
Your ancenstor was awarded in 1905 the order of Wasa 2nd class, a class specifically for foreigners. You can find him in the 1915 edition of the "statskalender".

Are you serving AAC?.

Apache country there, training and HQ. Who knows why one place is chosen over the other, lots of scrambled egg deciding one way or the other over personal wants and needs. Keeps the AAC wildcats, merlins etc alongside the Navy, cabbage heads and Junglies squadrons I suppose.
11 years of research on your part has to be a lot of info and insight. I expect you have a tie up with the Chalk historical group? Mike Peters and the Eagle? I did hear that he was going to get a picture of that plaque into his magazine but I don't know if he ever did. I must ask.
-
Thanks my friend, it's been a long time since I visited Middle Wallop; it was all Scouts, Lynxes and Alouettes back then!.
11 years spent researching the old man did Indeed lead to me joining the GPR Association; Mike Peters is the editor of 'The Eagle' now. I would certainly remember it if your artwork had been featured; seems strange that it hasn't because the journal's staff are always requesting content. I would give Mike Peters a nudge on that one, I'm sure the readers would like to see it
I know of Matt Yates and Chalk, not corresponded with him at any time though.

I've taken the liberty of moving your query to the Mongolian section, on the possibly spurious grounds that the experts there are more likely to have answers than the rest of us! I hope that's acceptable. If not, I'll move it back, though there is a link on the 'Rest of the World' section as well. Good luck with the query!

Hello Robin!
I just saw your post with assorted skulls/mottoes of the Royal Lancers. as you say - all is well! However, if you for some reason should be interested in another skull - from Sweden - just let me know. I have one of the "Jägare 4.skvadron" patches from this thread http://gmic.co.uk/topic/47033-swedish-cavalry-cloth-insignia-life-regiment-hussars/#comment-433574 for trade, should you be interested. The price? - A "Now we are one"-patch commemorating the Royal Lancers amalgamation! The patch I offer is a very rare patch (I estimate <50 were made, from my squadron of the Life-regiment hussars back in 89/90). To my knowledge, we of the section leaders school (GBS) got ours (and our GBS patches), but the troopers never even got their "Jägare" (Ranger) patches. If you are interested, just reply! I recently parted with a patch related to my regiment, the recipient would have been very happy with one of these skull patches, but in this case I feel it more appropriate if it would find a new home with a true skull collector!
Best,
/Jonas

Hi there Thomas, I am doing a bit of research into the loss of life of the Bulwark and stumbled upon your post. saw that you have my Great Grandfather, Grandfather and Great Uncle's medals (Archie-Moore, Albert and William-Archie Parsons). Bit of a surprise ! Where did they turn up ?
-
Good Evening Mr. Williamson.
My name is John Hardin and I came across the gmic.co.uk website while conducting research for a book I am currently writing. I've read through many of your posts and I am amazed by the collection of documents you posess and by your knowledge of the feldgendarmerie in WWII. I am specifically interested in the role different feldgendarmerie units played in Poland in 1943. Would you be interested in speaking with a very eager and passionate student of all things Nazi Germany and the Third Reich?
-
Hi Stuart,
I was just conducting some research re the early head dress of RAMC and their forebears and came across your officers' pill box cap with peak, the first one that I have been able to study close up. I am ex-RAMC and it is one area of militaria that I am very interested in, and I wondered (a) if you still have it, and (b) if would you consider selling it? If not then I apologise for the unprompted request.
Regards,
John Watson

Hi Chris
Nick, our fearless leader, has given me the 'power' to move posts, so I did. I think it will get mnore views here, as the Africa forum is almost excluseivley used by a handful of collectors of post colonial ODM. Again, thanks for a fine post on an interesting topic.

Hi Peter, I came across your photos of the RUC Dress Uniform. I have two slightly different types and I am looking for information. Did you ever manage to find photos of the uniforms being worn
-
Hi Steve,
Again thanks for the information, I am at present getting ready to do some research on him, I will send full details of his citation and the location of incident for inclusion on the BTPHG site.
The main reason for this message is that I initially went to the BTPHG site to view Michaels entry thereon, I then viewed Police Roll of Honour Trust and was a bit confused/dismayed to see he was not included on it.(AS best as I could see, but I do attend Spec Savers) I mention this just in case it has been an oversight and he is meant to be on the PRofHT.

Hi Steve,
I was perusing an old Auction list (C.2010) and came across this pair of medals. Defence medal with Kings Commendation Oak Leaf for brave conduct and the LMS silver medal for courage.
They were awarded to Special Constable Herbert George Thomas of Sheffield (Wicker) 12th December 1941 for Courage during the Blitz on Sheffield.
I presume he was a Sheffield special but worked for LMS or could be the Gallant act took place on LMS land.
Just two medals the LMS is shown Obverse and Reverse. They sold for £1000.oo
Thought you may be interested.
Regards, Peter

Thanks Peter...sorry for delay in replying but not been so good! Will pass on the information for investigation. Best wishes Steve
A quick reply.....yes there was a guy with this name who was a LMS police special but was based at Bow in London....thanks for the information. We now have to find out whether this is the correct one.....was the information about Sheffield on the eBay entry? Joined LMS specials on 25/09/1939 and left 24/09/1945 to return to the railway.
